Kefalonia, one of Greece’s most enchanting islands, is not just about its azure waters and golden beaches. It’s also a haven for lovers of well-cooked traditional Greek food, and modern culinary innovations of the Greek kitchen. If you’re planning a trip to this Ionian paradise, here are some 5 places that I enjoyed eating at that will make your gastronomic journey unforgettable. In this blog post, we’ll explore them. Enjoy reading ‘Food tips for Kefalonia: 5 amazing places to eat at’.
If you’re a fan of fresh fish and seafood, there’s a traditional beachfront restaurant on Lourdas beach that you should go to: Klimatis Tavern. Imagine dining with the gentle sound of waves in the background and a plate full of the day’s freshest catch in front of you!
For those who love traditional Greek food, Lorraine’s Magic Hill, above the beach of Lourdas, is a must-visit. Not only does it offer mouth-watering dishes that represent the essence of Greek cuisine, but it also boasts a stunning sunset view. Lorraine is quite the character. She comes to every single table every evening to explain what is on the menu and how she cooked it. With big gestures. The explanation alone is worth going here. But the view and taste of the food make it perfect.
Located near the famous Monastery of Saint Gerasimos, Taverna Mpotsolos offers traditional Greek food at its best. After paying your respects at the monastery (as most tourists do on a visit of Kefalonia), head over to this taverna for a meal! Sorry, I just took one picture of the delicious traditional Greek ‘horta’ cause I was too busy eating and having a good time.
If you’re spending a day at Skala beach, make sure to sit at Ammos Beach Bar. Not only is it brand-new and aesthetically pleasing, for such a modern beach bar the prices for a set of loungers (€ 15 in June 2023) are very good. In addition to that, the bar is located on a less-crowded part of the famous Skala beach. And because the food is of high quality, you can stay there all day (and night). Try the club sandwich with freshly grilled chicken, or even sushi!
No trip to Greece is complete without indulging in its traditional sweets. Voskopoula in the main shopping street of Argostoli (the capital of Kefalonia) is the place to be if you have a sweet tooth. Here you can try and buy the delicious local, traditional ‘mandola’: roasted almonds with a sweetened crust in different flavors. Be careful cause they are very addictive!
