The Ultimate Food Guide to Ermoupoli, Syros: Where to Eat and Drink in the Island’s Capital

Ermoupoli, the capital of the Greek island of Syros, is a hidden gem when it comes to gastronomic experiences. At least, in my opinion. I never hear people talking about Syros as a foodie destination, yet it was the most pleasant surprise in terms of food on my 81-day Greece trip. On which, obviously, I visited many islands. In this blog post, we’ll explore the best places to eat and drink in ‘The Ultimate Food Guide to Ermoupoli, Syros: Where to Eat and Drink in the Island’s Capital’.

Local Craft Beer

Before diving into specific places, it’s worth mentioning that Syros has its own craft beer, Syra, that has a fresh nice taste and is definitely worth a try!

Breakfast, lunch and coffee

  • Epta for breakfast: for breakfast, brunch and lunch (and coffee), you must go to Epta. Delicious omelets, coffee and pancakes! And aesthetically a very pleasing cafe as well.

Traditional Tavernas with yummy food

If you’re looking for an authentic Greek experience, don’t miss out on visiting these traditional tavernas in Ermoupoli. Here, the trick is to share various starters and other dishes and try the whole menu! Classic dishes with a local twist, or local specialities.

  • Stin Ithaki tou Ai: In the heart of town, you will find Stin Ithaki tou Ai in a very cute alley filled with tables. A super cosy, traditional dining spot. The food is affordable there are many traditional dishes and local ingredients on the menu. My favorite was pasturmadopita, pie with melted cheese and the Greek version of pastrami.
  • To Tsipouradiko Tis Mirsinis: If you want the same quality food, but sit on the harborfront, go to To Tispouradiko Tis Mirsinis. For a taverna that sells traditional Greek mezes, the presentation of the food and beautiful modern decoration of the restaurant stands out!

Dinner with a view

There are lots of places in Ermoupoli, Syros, where you can have food with a spectacular view. Let me highlight 2 of them.

  • Braziliana: Above Ermoupoli, in Ano Syros, there are some restaurants with a balcony that look out over the whole town. A spectacular sight! If you want to eat something else than traditional Greek food, I recommend Braziliana. A great bar that serves food as well, such as delicious pinsa.
  • Sta Vaporia: Ermoupoli has the most impressive swim spot of all Greek towns: Ateria beach below the impressive church of Agios Nikolaos. Looking out over this swim spot with amazing blue waters is Sta Vaporia. A super romantic location for food that serves delicious meals as well.

(Traditional) Sweets

  • Ice cream at Django: There’s only ONE option that counts when it comes to ice cream in Ermoupoli and that is Django Gelato. They have one shop in Athens as well and I swear it is one of the best gelato’s in Greece (and I’ve tried quite a few).
  • Traditional sweets at Zachari & Alati: If you’re interested in traditional Greek sweets, Zachari & Alati is a must-visit. This shop specializes in local delicacies that will give you a taste of Syros’ traditions. You have to try halvadopita, which is like nougat sandwich. There are many different flavors and it’s great to take home as a souvenir too.

Cocktails

Drinking cocktails might be one of your favorite holiday activities. And I get why. It just fits the sun, sea, hot weather, and fun atmosphere. Luckily, Syros is full of amazing cocktail bars. I will highlight 3:

  • Porte Galleria Del Cocktail: Porte Galleria Del Cocktail is not just about the drinks; the interior is as stunning as the exterior of the building. It’s a great place to sit, sip and watch people in the heart of town after a day of sightseeing.
  • Rooftop of the Aristide Hotel: Open to anyone, not just hotel guests, the rooftop of the fancy Aristide hotel offers an elevated cocktail experience with panoramic views of Ermoupoli. On top of that, they deliver original cocktail mixes that are very tasty!
  • Theosis Bar: Located in the main alley of Ano Syros, Theosis Bar is another excellent option for cocktail enthusiasts. The ambiance is trendy but local, sitting on stairs and poofs.
