These are 5 must do’s in the capital of Syros, Ermoupoli. Ermoupoli, the enchanting capital of Syros Island in Greece, is probably the most gorgeous town of Greece. It makes Syros a destination that promises a blend of rich history, stunning architecture, and breathtaking swim spots. Ermoupoli is also the capital of the Cyclades island group, and if you have been you will understand why. If this city was located on the mainland of Europe it would 100% sure be a very popular city trip destination. In this respect, it is one of the destinations in Greece you can easily visit all year round. More than enough locals live there to keep some life in the city during winter. However, because Syros is an island, it is also the perfect place for those who want to combine city and beach. In case you’re planning a trip to this Grecian paradise, here are the must-dos in Ermoupoli to make the most of your visit.

How to get to Ermoupoli, Syros
Syros does have an airport, which connects the island to Athens. You can book a flight with Sky Express.
Most people get to Syros by boat. It is very well connected to Athens, the surrounding Cycladic islands (such as Mykonos which is really nearby, and Naxos) and even to the North Aegean islands and Dodecanese islands (all the way till Rhodes there is a direct ferry)! You can easily search and find ferry routes routes on the search engine of Ferryhopper and easily find a date and time of your convenience.

1. The Church of Agios Nikolaos: A Spiritual Giant
Standing tall and majestic, the Church of Agios Nikolaos is not just a religious site but also an architectural marvel. Built in the 19th century, its neo-gothic design and intricate interiors are a testament to the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. The church’s blue dome and yellow twin bell towers are iconic landmarks, that are visible from almost everywhere in the city. It is definitely the easiest recognizable spot of Ermoupoli. Inside, you’ll find much beauty as well, such as stunning frescoes and chandeliers.
2. Asteria Beach: A Slice of Heaven with a View
This is 100% the prettiest swim spot in Greece. I would literally not mind having to swim here every day (even in winter) as many locals do. That’s why I went in at the end of April with water of only 18c for my first swim of the year. I could not leave Syros without swimming here. The backdrop of the Agios Nikolaos church and the amazing blue waters just make Asteria beach the perfect setting. In summer, on the side there is a beach bar as well called Ciel Syros.
3. The Town Hall: A Masterpiece of Neoclassical Architecture
Designed by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller, Ermoupoli’s Town Hall is a grand structure that dominates the central square of the city, Miaouli Square. With its symmetrical façade, large columns, and ornate details, it’s a prime example of neoclassical architecture. The building not only serves administrative purposes but also stands as a symbol of Ermoupoli’s prosperous past. You can walk in during opening hours (9 AM to 3 PM Monday to Friday) and wander around for a bit. In the atrium, there is a cafe for the employees where you can technically also sit and have a drink with them.
4. The Apollon Theatre: A Nod to Italian Elegance
Did you know that Ermoupoli houses a miniature version of La Scala in Milan? It is true, the architect that designed this theatre was heavily inspired by La Scala. The Apollon Theatre, with its red plush seats and beautiful details is a cultural hub that has hosted countless performances since its inauguration in 1864. During the day you can visit for a small entrance fee (€ 2, 10 AM – 2 PM and 6 PM – 9 PM except when there’s a performance or rehearsal) and walk around in the building. On the top floor there is a collection of artifacts of performances, things used by performers and other collectables. But of course, you can also check the schedule and try to go to an actual performance while you are there. This will make your visit to Ermoupoli extra special! Check the agenda on the website of the theatre before you go.
5. Ano Syros: A Journey Back in Time
High on a hill above Ermoupoli, Ano Syros is the city’s upper town that goes back a long way as it was built during medieval times (around 1200) by the Venetians. It has narrow alleys, whitewashed houses, blooming bougainvillea and therefore a dreamy vibe. You can catch a FREE bus from Ermoupoli up to Ano Syros, but if your legs allow it, I highly recommend walking all the way up from the Town Hall of Ermoupoli to Ano Syros via countless stairs. This is the best way to explore all the layers, from the bottom to the top, of Ermoupoli. You will see where some locals live, cross countless bougainvillea trees, and pass by several viewpoints. Ano Syros is the perfect place for spending one afternoon and night. Have a fabulous dinner and a cocktail with a view (check out my Ermoupoli food guide for some suggestions).
