What Should You Pack for a Trip to Greece? Tips & Packing Guide for Every Month of the Year

Not sure what to put in that suitcase? This is a practical packing guide, showing what to pack for your trip to Greece in every month of the year

Greece is a dream destination for many. But when it comes to packing for a trip to this Mediterranean paradise, the changing seasons can make packing your suitcase a challenge, especially for first time visitors. To help you navigate this issue, here’s a month-by-month guide on what to pack for a trip to Greece.

The weather in December, January and February in Greece can be unpredictable. The winter months in Greece can see temperatures ranging from 0 to 20° C. While 20° is very warm for the time of year, 0° is more typical in mountainous terrains or on particularly cold days. The average temperature lies somewhere in between. During sunny days, temperatures can feel warmer, allowing for lighter clothing. If you’re adventurous, you might even take a dip in therapeutic waters, like Lake Vouliagmeni in Athens, which remains above 20° C. However, as the sun sets, you’ll need a proper winter coat. If you’re venturing into the mountains, prepare for full winter attire, including hats and gloves. Always check the weather report before you travel.

March marks the beginning of spring in Greece. While the days start to get warmer (up t0 25C if you are very lucky, which definitely is not always the case), evenings are still very chilly. Jackets, scarves, and lots of layers are necessary to bring. You can pack a T-shirt for the warmer sunny days, but you do not need to pack many shorts (a long skirt or thin linen pants would be better).

Spring is in full swing in Greece in April, but the weather can still be a bit unpredictable. Day temperatures often feel like early summer, but nights can be cooler, requiring a coat. It’s not uncommon to experience rain, leading to chilly early spring days. Packing a variety of clothing, from dresses to jeans and vests, is advisable. You can see examples in the video below. In April, I do make my first swims of the year in Greece, although the water is still cold. You will probably be wearing long, thin pants during the days still. During May it starts to become more of a proper summer weather. There will be more and more days where you can go out and about in shorts and a t-shirt, and if you are lucky, ditch the jacket at night. The beach by then will be more than warm enough to sunbathe on in your bikini, however the water still hasn’t reached summer temperatures.

June marks the beginning of the real Greek summer. Daytime outfits (unless you encounter a very shitty year) are simple: swimwear, shorts, and t-shirts. However, nighttime temperatures can vary based on the specific location and year. While places like Corfu might require a vest in early June, Athens or the more southern islands like Crete can be scorching hot. Do though always pack a light jacket or vest.

The peak of summer in Greece. Expect super hot, sunny days, perfect for the beach. Light summer clothing (shorts, singlets, summer dresses), sun hats, and plenty of sunscreens are essential. You can wear these things during the day and during the night cause it barely cools down. However, some islands (especially the Cyclades) can have breezy evenings, so I always advise you to bring at least a shawl or cardigan (just in case). The same applies to visiting very mountainous areas.

September remains warm. With temperatures between 25 and 30° C it is definitely more than just an Indian Summer. Daytime attire doesn’t differ much from July and August. So you can pack the same type of clothing. However, be prepared for occasional short, intense showers. They do not cool down the atmosphere much though. Nights can vary from warm to slightly chilly, so packing a vest or light jacket and a pair of thin long pants is a must just in case.

October will still offer beach days, especially in southern regions like Crete. Over there, you can still swim during the entire month of October. In the more northern regions though, it might cool down a bit earlier. However, there are years, like 2023, when the temperature remains 26-28C all month long all over Greece. Generally speaking, however, temperatures hover around 22-23° C, but cooler days might require longer pants and vests. As the month progresses, layering becomes key, especially during colder, windy days. And at night towards the end of October you will sure need a thicker vest or summer coat, and long thin pants.

After the extended summer, November sees quite a drop in temperatures, ranging between 15 and 25° C. But do not expect the 25° C, this is more exceptional and reserved for some warmer regions, than common. While places like Thessaloniki might require long-sleeved shirts and long pants, southern areas like Crete can still feel quite warm. Depending on your location, pack everything from bikinis to semi-winter coats.
