Visiting Mon Repos, Corfu

What is Mon Repos? Mon Repos Park & Mon Repos Museum

Mon Repos (‘my rest’) or Paleopolis (‘old city’) is an estate and forest that belonged to several royals for a long time.

It contains a villa built in 1831 in colonial style with some Greek and neoclassical elements. This villa was a temporary home for Empress Sissi of Austria (before she had the Achilleon built), and is also the place where Prince Philip of Greece (who later married Queen Elizabeth of England) was born. So much history!

Now, it is fully open to the public. The forest ‘park’ is very nice and used by locals to walk their dogs or exercise, as with high temperatures the shades are very welcome. The villa is now a museum and certainly worth a short visit.

How to get to Mon Repos?

If you are planning on visiting Mon Repos by vehicle, you can park it here on a small parking lot opposite the entrance of the estate. Be careful because around this area there are many one-way streets.

The bus stop is right next to the parking lot. Line 2A of the Corfu Blue City Buses goes there, from Spianada square in town. You can check the most recent timetables and ticket prices on the website of the Corfu Blue City Bus.

Mon Repos Palace / Paleopolis Museum

The Mon Repos Museum is approximately 2 km from the Corfu city center , close to Kanoni. It is part of the Mon Repos estate (a gorgeous park, for more info see the section on Corfu town / Kanoni). The museum is located in the Mon Repos Palace, a neoclassical villa that was built during the British rule by the High Commissioner Frederic Adam (1828-1831). Its name is French for ‘my rest’. It was later owned by the Greek royal family. The late British Prince Philip, who was born Prince of Greece, was actually born in this villa. Inside you can see artifacts such as old pictures and maps that show you how Corfu (town) developed over the centuries. Since the estate is also an archeological site, the first floor shows some objects found during the excavations. Opposite the entrance of the estate, you can see that large excavations are still going on. In summer the museum is open everyday

Kardaki beach

If you walk even further through the park you will reach Kardaki or Mon Repos Park beach. It’s one for the locals! There are no facilities, but because of it is secluded location next to Kerkyra town it is an ideal spot to swim all year round. Kardaki actually means ‘little heart’, which refers to the shape of the beach. The colors of the water are also very beautiful.
